It’s Been Wet…

and that’s an understatement.

The rain started last Thursday evening and hasn’t stopped.  It’s been either misting or down pouring with strong winds every day since.  It doesn’t look like we’ll get relief until Wednesday and even that’s iffy.

It’s been a crappy fall (I believe I’ve mentioned that), but there is some beauty around.

Fall = Suck

The change in the season has brought too many changes and too many problems.  Any time I get to myself now I spend on bike, as long as it’s okay with Mother Nature.  We are having a typical Maritime autumn with cold temperatures and gale force winds.  There was barely enough time to see the leaves change before they were blown away.

As usual, I be pushing my riding season as far as I possibly can with hopes that the new fairing will make things more bearable when the temps drop below freezing.  I can already notice a difference during my ride to work with my hands being mostly protected and the wind taken off my chest.  Definitely no regrets on that purchase.

Really, it’s just the same shit happening all the time.  There’s too much crap going on for me to be in a good mood to post anything.  Winter is just around the corner which means I won’t even be able to use my bike to cool off or escape.  I think I’ll probably just let this go dormant until something happens to make me the person I used to be…

ciao for now.

Good gods...

If I don't get my new rear tire soon, I'm gonna snap.  I have it ordered, but it still hasn't come in.  It's been over a week since my last ride and it's killing me.  I can't even ride to work.  Also, it's almost mid August...holy shit...

Irked

Okay, I thought changing my rear brake pads would get rid of that damn squeak. Apparently, I was wrong. Every time I come to a stop the rear brakes start squeaking. It's irritating the holy crap out me! I inspected the disk when I changed up the pads and everything looked fine. It was so nice to do low speed turns without a single squeak coming from the rear end, but it all ended two nights ago.

I'm at a loss. Anyone out there have any suggestions before people start staring at me for swearing my head off as I come to a stop?

First ride

Well, I'm not officially riding, but I have been out for a ride.  Things are still a bit on the cool side here with morning temps around -8C (46F) and the roads still a bit icy.

I did get out for a ride on March 8th and 9th, but it wasn't because I wanted to.  Joey brought the car in for it's MVI and it failed...in a big way.  Brakes and rotors needed replacing and the topper was the oil pan.  Apparently our fantastic roads found a way to scratch the shit out of the oil pan resulting in a rather bad leak.  No car for us.  The next two days resulted in us using the bike to get around and pick up the new oil pan.  The 8th was nice and well above freezing, but the 9th was quite cold and demanded full face helmets.

On the plus side, looks like I don't need a new battery.  A couple of turnovers and Selene fired right up.  Now she just needs a full clean up and fluid check.

We got it

Snow that is.  Finally hit on Saturday December the 5th around 6pm.  I had to leave work early because of the fantastic flu that's floating around.  So in between much needed sleeps I got to watch snow fall and fall and fall.  At least 15cm of snow fell and the city probably dumped about 50cm of salt on it all.  This put a rather giant crimp in my plans to keep riding.  Sure, if the snow melts I can ride, but what about all that salt everywhere.  Do I really want all my chrome melting off?  I got some thinking to do...

While I'm on it...

The Honda bashing, that is.  I have issues with this

I'm gonna sound like an elitist jerk here, but so be it.  Here we go...beautiful bike, but things like this are going to make motorcycling a little too accessible.  This is a fully clutchless 1200cc machine and the only thing I can think of is that someone will be screaming down the highway talking on a cell phone because - WOW, now I have a free hand!  My prediction is that the more prolific these types of bikes get the more you will see things scarier then someone doing a wheelie down the highway.  A motorcycle is what it is because every part of you is involved in making that machine work and stay on the road.  You don't pay attention...you pay the price.

I know this isn't a first and it certainly isn't a first for Honda, but I can't say the DN-01 ever worried me that much.  Interesting "bike", but not much staying power.

Yes I know you can get the bike in manual, yes I know you can make the automatic into a shifter.  The fact is this type of full production bike opens the door for others to go, "We can do that..." The thought horrifies me as there are enough things to worry about while riding.

So there you have it, I'm an elitist.  So say what you will and correct in where I'm wrong, but I don't want tons of people discovering my favourite thing to do, and I don't want them ruining it for the rest of us.  I certainly don't want to see someone cruising down the road at or above speed limit while trying to answer that desperately important phone call.

Disclaimer: No disrespect to scooter riders.  I know you are all a cool respectful bunch that would have better sense then to do that.

Honda...what have you done...

They've taken the Sabre name and swapped it to yet another bike.

Good gods...we've gone cookie cutter style just like the VTX...which I had no love for to begin with.  Oh hey!  The Fury looks cool, let's make different versions!  Oh, and let's use the the cookie cutter VTX engine!  Brilliant!

So along with the "Sabre" we have the Fury

and the Stateline

So once it's time to move on from my Sabre (which I know is a rebirth of the V45) I won't be staying with Honda.  I didn't think I would anyway, but this just cements the thought for me.

First...

First snowfall of the season last night.  Fantastic...Old Man Winter making a small but cold announcement of his impending return.

Not the best pic.  It was taken with my phone, in the dark, behind patio door of my cozy apartment.  Still, it's snow and it doesn't deserve a picture that makes it look good.

Here we go again

Well, we're back to the chilly weather again, summer is mostly a memory and I feel like starting up a hibernation cycle.  The last couple of days have been our typical fall weather...windy and rainy.  Neither of which makes for a very enjoyable ride.

Seeing blue skies and sun this morning made for a mixed bag of feelings due to the frost warning we've had in effect for the last two nights.  But it made for a nice ride to work regardless.  The old thermometer read 2C (35F) so I found myself going back to an old routine...layers.  All in all it wasn't too bad, the sun kept me warm for the most part and it was an invigorating ride because of the chill.

I both enjoy and hate this time of the season.  It's beautiful and at no other time do you see colours of this sort in nature.  The cool crisp mornings have a "new" feel to them and each day seems like a new adventure.  The hate part?  Essentially, summer is dying and soon we'll be covered in a monochrome blanket that makes even thinking about going outside a chore.

Hopefully the winter will be a short and mild one and at most I'll be off the bike for a mere three months.  There, that's a pleasant thought to hold onto.

Fixed...maybe?

IIS gave me a few issues...okay...a lot of issues.  But I think everything should be working as normal.  If you see any issues with images (aside from slow load times) or you get prompted for a password, give me a heads up in the comments.

By the way, Windows Home Server rocks.

Apologies

To anyone that saw me start following your blog and then shortly there after stop following your blog.  Apparently when you import the blogs you are following into blogger from google reader, it quickly duplicates all those blogs back into your google reader in a folder/tag that can't be deleted or changed in anyway.  Luckily you can stop following and they disappear from google reader.

Until they fix this "feature" I'll stick to following you all on google reader.  Sorry about that.

I need a ride...

Work is hell.  Changes are being brought in that increase our workload exponentially.  This doesn't seem bad until it's put into this context: Four people taking care of satellite installations for close to 6000 hotels.  Even better when the changes are because of one mistake from one of the three you work with.

Winter is hell.  Yet another snow storm due to hit some time this afternoon.  I know you're sick of hearing me say it, but it's my blog...I'm sick of winter and snow and ice and driving the car. :p

I need a ride...

After work tomorrow, I may put the battery back in just so I can ride in circles around the garage where I have Selene parked.

Um...

That last post was in regards to a blog I set up on posterous. My motorcycle blog is not going dormant.

Maritime fall

What is with the fall season in the Maritimes?  Or is it just Saint John?  You get a nice day and the winds are crazy.  The last few days I've been blown all parts of the road.  I suppose I can't complain too much...I'm still riding at least.

I may be done.

Well, the white stuff finally hit, no bones about it.  It started snowing on Friday night and continued well into Saturday.  Our temperatures have been anywhere from -5C to -15C (23F to 5F) so it hasn't gone anywhere.  It's been cold and white all weekend and not exactly biking weather.

My only saving grace may be the next couple of days.  It's supposed to warm up to 4C (39F) tomorrow and 10C (50F) the next day plus rain.  I can only hope this comes to pass as it will wipe out the snow we already have.  It's way too early to give up riding yet.  I would love to be riding on Xmas day.

Un-fucking-believeable

Excuse my language, but this really bothers me.  You remember that accident a while back here in New Brunswick?
Motorist fined after striking motorcycle wedding procession

An Oromocto, N.B., man pleaded guilty Monday to charges laid after
he drove his car into a procession of motorcylists on their way to a
wedding in August, severely injuring five of the riders - including the
groom and his best friend.

Matthew Francis, 27, was charged last week with driving without due
care and attention, and driving without insurance. He entered the
guilty pleas on his first appearance in Burton provincial court.

He was fined a total of about $2,400, and his licence was suspended for four months.

Francis told the court his daughter in the back seat had distracted
him when he swerved across the centre line on Lincoln Road, smashing
into the motorcycle wedding procession.

The crash happened Aug. 9 as 10 motorcyclists were heading to CFB Gagetown for a wedding.

The groom, Frank Bouchard, and his best friend, Alain Belanger,
suffered serious injuries in the crash just 20 minutes before the
wedding was to take place.

Crown prosecutor Paul Hawkins told the court that witnesses agreed
that the red Ford Escort station wagon swerved across the centre line
of the two-lane highway, striking five of the motorcycles.

He said there was no evidence that speed or alcohol contributed to the accident, and so criminal charges were not warranted.

Chief provincial court Judge Leslie Jackson called it a "tragic incident" where "momentary inattention had grave consequences."

Francis asked for four months to pay the fine because he is unemployed.

Two of the injured motorcyclists, including one man who lost his foot, were in court, but declined to comment.

The motorcyclists, members of a Fredericton-area club known as the
Passchendaele Unit, which is part of the Canadian Army Veteran
Motorcycle Units association, had planned the procession as a surprise
for the bride.

Crap weekend

The last thing you want this close to the end of the season is a crappy weekend.  But that's exactly what happened.  I don't get many weekends off, so when they happen I like to enjoy them.  You know, get out on the bike, get some distance logged.  Our club has weekend rides as well, so it's nice to get out with everyone when I have the time off.

But hurricane Kyle had different plans for the weekend...actually for my full three days off.  I got to ride home from work, but after that all I could do was sit around the house.

Here's hoping we have a late winter...

They can't be serious...

Has anyone seen the new BMW commercial? I say new because it's the first time I've seen it. I gave up on satellite and cable a long time ago.

I can't find a copy of it online, but if I do I'll post a link here. The commercial starts with showing people doing their best to save money on gas. A couple of guys on bicycle, a guy on a bus, and a guy gearing up for his scooter. Suddenly, their dark and dreary looking days are interrupted by a gleaming white car. As the car passes by each person, you can see them looking longingly at it. The car is soon shown to be a BMW and it's obvious that they are boasting it's ability to look good and go distances on a tank of gas.

I'm thinking, cool, BMW is getting in on the green thing and finally have some fuel efficient cars. But can they really rival a scooter?

The commercial hits the end and I almost spit out my drink as I see the listing for the MPG. You ready for this?

28

Yup, 28 MPG. And that's on the highway! They didn't even list the city rating. I lost it. They seriously think this can be considered a fuel efficient car?! They seriously think that some guy on his scooter looks longingly at this gas gobbler?! I couldn't make out the scooter, but I can guarantee that it's gas mileage is much better then that. Hell, my cruiser gets almost double that! I laughed all the way to the computer and immediately had to blog about it.

Oh, and the web site. HA! Check it out...

Fogging fog

I left work early yesterday in order to make my club's Monday night meeting. I wanted to be there to hand out the items that some members ordered. When I came in to work earlier in the day, it was gorgeous and threatening to be a scorcher of a day. By the time 7pm rolled around a wall of fog had moved in.

The fog got so bad that we had to cut the meeting short. It was nuts! I went for a spin afterward, but it was so foggy that I was soaked in a matter of minutes. I will continue to say that we don't have fog, we have suspended rain.

By morning the fog was still there, thick as ever, but at least the roads were dry. I had full intentions of riding in. The moment I gear up and step outside...rain. Truly typical.

The weather isn't looking too bad for the rest of the week. I'm hoping for at least a couple of good days so I can get some riding in. The end of the season is fast approaching and I haven't been riding half as much as I should have.
