oh my.

how on earth did i miss the unveiling of this beautiful thing?!

here is a quick blurb:

The DN-01 is a concept model that developed with the aim of "creating new value" without being locked into any existing category of motorcycle. While the automatic model has been synonymous with the scooter and has made a clear departure from motorcycles, Honda presents the automatic sports cruiser "DN-01" featuring Honda's unique infinitely variable hydraulic mechanical transmission, the "HFT" (Human Fitting Transmission). The DN-01 is easy to operate and offers much sportier performance than existing automatic transmissions. Delivering an exciting riding experience like no other, the DN-01 Discovery Cruiser offers adults a fresh motorcycling style.

it looks like some kind of creature. i love it!

I suspect that Honda does not want to be outdone by the competitive Yamaha FJR, which is a favorite of the serious sport tourers. Yet their ST1300 is a nice machine desite it's weight (over 600 lbs). Yamaha launched a semi-automatic transmission (opt to use semi-a or manual with a flip of a switch) this year. Sport touring bikes are the up and coming. Yet there is a hefty price for all these bells and whistles.

This prototype is, I suspect, an attempt to attract the cruiser people to the sport tourers; it looks like a hybrid. And it does look a bit like a little Alien (from the movie).

It's sexy, no doubt about that. Yeah, I like it too.

gymi: thanks for the welcome and thanks for dropping by!

macrobe: yeah, it very much look like a hybrid and there is one heck of a lot of bells and whistles (glowing ignition ring? :)). if this thing ever came to be, i can imagine a hefty price tag.

One note about prototypes at the shows: most contain fancy doo-dads, bells and whistles. If and when they come to market, many of those features are absent. The price tag is too high and most are not willing to pay.

yeah, it's the same way with the "cars of tomorrow" prototypes you see. i'd still want the glowing ignition ring though. hehe. what can i say, i'm a bells and whistles kind of guy. :)

I can empathize. I want all my guages, sensors and controls, and GPS settings holographically displayed on the bottom half of the V-strom's windshield :)

seeing how much we are akin to pilots, aside from the wings, i think we should have had heads up displays a long time ago. would be wonderful to have all the needed information on a windshield or visor. hate to replace it if it got boken though. :(

That technology is on its way. I read in one of the science rags that a Japanese car dealer is planning on installing it in their high-end models. Might be some time before it appears on a motorcycle though.

yeah, that would be an amazing thing. and it's not like it's an expensive technology or anything. it's been around for years and even used in some older model cars. i think one model of a cadilac had a version of it.
